Les apparences sont souvent trompeuses. Ainsi, à Do Néva, près de Houaïlou, il existe au bord de la route un vieux bâtiment, massif et laid, dans lequel on faisait encore la classe l’année dernière. On voit bien que la construction est ancienne et solide, mais délabrée et sans grâce. Pourtant, voici environ 70 ans, c’était la première école protestante construite par les mélanésiens eux-mêmes pour accueillir et former les “natas” du pasteur Leenhardt. Jan David Pasteur, born 23 May 1753 in Leyden, died 9 January 1804, held important positions of state after the revolution of 1795. This did not stop him from becoming one of the country’s most prolific writers. He also translated more than 80 works, Cook’s travels, among them. In 1855, Lady Amelia Murray (one time lady in waiting to Queen Victoria) came to America. During this visit she came to view “the Silver Spring” of which she had heard much.
