The Edward Pleasants Valentine Papers

the-edward-pleasants-valentine-papersAbstracts of Records in the Local and General Archives of Virginia Relating to the Families of Allen, Bacon, Ballard, Batchelder, Blouet, Brassieur (Brashear), Cary, Crenshaw, Dabney, Exum, Ferris, Fontaine, Gray, Hardy, Isham (Henrico County), Jordan, Langston, Lyddall, Mann, Mosby, Palmer, Pasteur, Pleasants, Povall, Randolph, Satterwhite, Scott, Smith (the family of Francis Smith of Hanover County), Valentine, Waddy, Watts, Winston, Womack, Woodsoon.

This is a remarkable collection of abstracts of wills, administration accounts, deeds, land patents and court orders gathered by the late Edward Pleasants Valentine from the county and state archives of Virginia. It was the purpose of Mr. Valentine to use this data as source Material in the compilation of a comprehensive history of the Valentine and related families. He contemplated a family history different from the usual genealogy. His ideal was a work that would illustrate, by its comprehensiveness, the social and economic life of Virginia for three centuries Mr. Valentine died in 1908, before completing his work, but he/left his collection of data to the Valentine Museum, in which he has shown enthusiastic interest as a member of its board of trustees for many years. Believing that it would be impossible for anyone else’ to prepare the history of the family as Mr. Valentine had planned it, the Board decided to publish the whole collection of notes and references as it stood, without elaboration into a, continuous historv, and thus gives the public the result of this extensive investigation. In the course of his research, Mr. Valentine became interested in thirty-four families. He had a thorough and exhaustive examination made of the county and parish archives of Virginia for references to each of these families. As a result of this method of investigation, thousands of references were discovered which not only provided information for the history of the families in which Mr. Valentine was specifically interested, but also disclosed clues to the genealogy of hundreds of other ‘families. The publication therefore will prove of value not only to those who are descended from the families whose history forms the basis for the principal studies, but to thousands of others who are related to families whose names appear incidentally.

Jean Pasteur 1700 Pasteur Family Jean (or John) Pasteur, a native of Genevois, Switzerland, came to the colony of Virginia with the Huguenot immigration in 1700, and settled at Williamsburg, where he practiced his profession of surgery and styling himself “barber and wigmaker.” In 1702 he designates himself as “Perrywig maker” (see Vol. II., p. 936); in 1737 as “Barber and Peruke maker” (Ibid., p. 939), and in 1741 (in making his will), as “Peruke maker” (Ibid., p. 939). He died in Williamsburg, Virginia, 1741. (See his will, Ibid., p. 940).
Jean Pasteur married, first, Mary (surname unknown); second, Martha, daughter of Thomas Harris, of Henrico County (see Ibid., p. 929-930). Mrs. Mary Pasteur died March 25, 1727. Mrs. Martha (Harris) Pasteur died May, 1746.
Jean and Mary Pasteur had issue:
1. John James Pasteur, of Norfolk, Peruke-maker, in 1741.
2. Mary Pasteur married Mark Cosby.
3. Magdalen Pasteur married Samuel Cosby.
4. Lucretia Pasteur married Matthew Shields.
5. John Pasteur, died June 2, 1727.
6. Sarah Pasteur, died December 17, 1734.
7. Reverend James Pasteur (died January 24, 1774 ), rector of St. Bride’s Parish, Norfolk County, Virginia.
8. Blouet Pasteur, of whom hereafter.
Jean and Martha (Harris) Pasteur had issue:
9. William Pasteur, of whom hereafter.
10. Martha Pasteur.
11. Ann Pasteur married Thomas Craig.
Blouet Pasteur (son of Jean and Mary Pasteur ) was a resident of Williamsburg, Virginia. In October, 1767, he advertised “a choice assortment of jewelry, silver-work, &c. to be sold at my shop next door below the Raleigh Tavern” (see Vol. II., p. 945). Evidently Blouet Pasteur was a jeweler and silver-smith in trade. He was living in Williamsburg as late as 1783, when he appears as a lot owner there. The name of his wife is unknown.
Blouet Pasteur was father of:
1. William Pasteur, born 1768. He was a legatee under the will of his uncle, Doctor William Pasteur, of Williamsburg, who died in March, 1791 (see post page 2286). Willam Pasteur (son of Blouet Pasteur ), settled in Fluvanna County, Virginia. He married, September, 1815, Polly (Mary) L. Ware. William Pasteur was sheriff of Fluvanna County, 1816 and 1817, and died 1823. (See Vol. II., p. 923-928).
2. Ann Pasteur married Granville Smith (circa 1758-1811 ), of Hanover, Chesterfield and Goochland Counties, Virginia. (See Smith Family, post page 2321.) Mrs. Smith was an heir of her uncle, Doctor William Pasteur.
William Pasteur (son of Jean and Martha [Harris] Pasteur ), of Williamsburg, Virginia. As early as 1752 he was an apprentice under Doctor George Gilmer, apothecary and surgeon, in Williamsburg. After concluding his “apprenticeship” William Pasteur entered on the practice of medicine and surgery. In 1767 and later years he had an apothecary shop in Williamsburg, and in 1775 he and Doctor Galt formed a partnership for the practice of “physic and surgery.” In 1773 Doctor Pasteur was chosen an Alderman for the town. In December, 1774, he was a member of the Williamsburg Committee of Safty, and in December, 1775, was chosen Mayor of Williamsburg. Doctor Pasteur was a surgeon in the Revolutionary War.
Jean Pasteur 1700 Pasteur Family The records of the Huguenot Emigration to Virginia in 1700 gives Jean Pasteur and Charles Pasteur and his wife. The relationship of Jean and Charles Pasteur is not stated and has not to this time been discovered. Jean and Charles were both natives of Genevois. Jean Pasteur settled in Williamsburg (as we have seen above). Charles Pasteur settled, with the larger body of the Huguenot refugees, in Henrico County. The Henrico County records give the Inventory and Appraisement of the estate of Reverend Charles Pasture, decd., taken 8 July, 1736, recorded October 1736. (See Vol. II., p. 930).
In December, 1903, the late Edward Pleasants Valentine made an attempt to discover the European origin of Jean and Charles Pasteur, the Virginia immigrants. On Dec. 31 he addressed an inquiry along this line to Doctor A. Pasteur, of Geneva, Switzerland. On January 18, 1904, Doctor Pasteur sent a very interesting letter to Mr. Valentine saying that he was unable to give any information whatsoever relative to the origin of the Virginia immigrants. Doctor Pasteur also sent to Mr. Valentine a copy of the genealogy of the Geneva Pasteurs from the second volume of the second edition of Notices genalogiques Sur les Familles Genevoises depuii les premiers temps, etc. Doctor Pasteur’s letter relates that “the first of our ancestors, Anthony Pasteur, ducal notary, took refuge in Geneva, fleeing the persecutions by the Duke of Savoy against the Reformed, after his coming back into the possession of the Genevois [a country south of Geneva belonging to Savoy since 1404 ], owing to a treaty concluded with the Bernese.” Mr. Valentine, after carefully studying Doctor Pasteur’s letter and the Genealogical Notes of the Geneva Pasteurs, sent the following letter to Doctor Pasteur : Richmond, Virginia, Feb. 13, 1904.
Dr. A. Pasteur, Petit Saconnex, Geneva, Switzerland. My Dear Sir: Your highly appreciated and comprehensive letter of the 18th of January was duly received and was soon followed by the interesting Genealogical Notes on the Pasteur family of Geneva. I thank you sincerely for the trouble you have taken to give me this valuable information, and it will afford me great pleasure if at any time I can in any way reciprocate this courtesy. I have read your letter and the Genealogical Notes several times, but can find no clue by which Jean Pasteur and the Rev. Charles Pasteur can be shown to be of the Geneva family. A reference to the records of the Huguenot emmigration to Virginia, made since the receipt of your letter, shows that the Pasteurs came from Genevois and not from Geneva as stated in my letter to you. My impression had been that Genevois and Geneva were the same until I saw by your letter that Genevois was a province or country south of Geneva. Another point which occurs to me is that the Pasteurs, who came to Virginia probably were the children of refugees who settled in England. I am led to this impression by the fact that such was the case with my ancestors of the Fontaine family. I will institute a search of the records of the Huguenot settlements in England in the hope of procuring a clue to the French refugee ancestor of the Pasteurs of Virginia, and perhaps when this search has been completed the valuable material which you so kindly sent me will furnish a link in my genealogical chain * * * Again thanking you for your kind letter and the valuable genealogical notes on the Pasteur family of Geneva, I am, Sincerely yours, Edward Pleasants Valentine.
It is to be regretted that Mr. Valentine did not at once undertake the research suggested in his letter to Doctor Pasteur, and in the absence of that effort on his part all that is at present known of the origin of the Virginia Pasteurs is contained in the entry in the Huguenot Emigration to Virginia (Virginia Historical Society Collections), page 33, which reads:
