The iPhone app Seeing AI describes the world for people with visual impairments.
In 2012, Microsoft released Seeing AI, an iPhone app for the visually impaired. Artificial intelligence analyzes the environment and describes it in detail.
Using neural network technology, the application can not only translate text, but also recognize people and currency units. In addition, Seeing AI is able to scan product barcodes and make a simplified description of an entire area or an imported image.
There is one important difference between Microsoft's new creation and other similar applications. This means that most basic functions, such as face recognition, are performed directly on the device. This gives the app a significant speed advantage.
Analyzing people, the program does not only try to name them. Also, if possible, the app will be able to indicate things like their approximate age, how far they are sitting, and their emotional state.
Microsoft has been working on the app since September 2016. And already in March 2016, its prototype was demonstrated.
